Our very own Danny Chan, MD, MBA took some time between cases to share more about the dedicated man behind the scrubs that our patients have come to trust with delivering a seamless, high-quality experience. As a Dallas fibroid doctor with 20+ years of experience, Dr. Chan joined Fibroid Institute Texas in July 2024. He has performed thousands of procedures, including uterine fibroid embolization (UFE), to help women who have suffered for years and deserve to live without fibroid symptoms. All the while, he preaches patient education and awareness and strongly believes uterine fibroids don’t have to keep women from living their best lives. By educating women about non-surgical fibroid treatment, Dr. Chan helps patients become fibroid free.
Board-certified by the American Board of Radiology in diagnostic radiology and vascular and interventional radiology, Dr. Chan co-founded the first independent vascular and interventional radiology practice in DFW (now known as StrideCare) to help patients avoid major surgery using minimally invasive techniques. He has an additional Registered Physician Vascular Interpreter (RPVI) certification, has published 11 peer-reviewed publications and two book chapters, and has presented at 17 national Medical Association meetings.
Dr. Chan earned his medical degree from Saint Louis University School of Medicine and an MBA from the University of Texas at Dallas. He completed a general surgery internship at New York Medical College at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, New York. Dr. Chan finished his training in New York City with a radiology residency at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Q & A With Danny Chan, MD, MBA of Fibroid Institute Texas
Q: Why did you decide to become a Dallas fibroid doctor? What personal and/or professional path brought you here, and how long have you been practicing?
A: Very early on, when I was a kid, I used to get sick or just not feel well, and I’d be taken to the doctor. No matter what it was—a cold or whatever—I always remember feeling better and reassured after leaving the doctor’s office. I always kept that with me, wanting to help people feel that same way. That was the seed in my mind about wanting to be a doctor. I also learned that I am good at science and math, which helped me—especially biology.
Q: What do you think is different about you and your team from other fibroid practices?
A: I think we started from humble beginnings. We’re not a big corporation. We’re very family-oriented; we care about our patients and treat them like family. For the people who work for us, people in the practice, and patients we see, we are focused on one thing: making them feel better. Many of us have worked in a hospital before and know what that feels like. We know what we don’t want our patients to feel like when they go through a procedure. We really take that wealth of experience and knowledge and apply it to how we treat patients in our practice.
Q: What are you most proud of regarding Fibroid Institute’s success, accomplishments, and impact on fibroid patients?
A: I’m proud of the awareness we’ve generated in the community. I’m proud of how we do our procedures, treat our patients, and control pain. We have a unique ability to have pain control and reduce it to almost nothing. Again, I’m just proud of the way we treat patients. We treat them like family and get personal interactions with them that you don’t normally get elsewhere.
Q: As a Dallas fibroid doctor, how do you develop relationships with fibroid patients to assure them that you’re on their side and part of their overall healthcare team?
A: The physician-patient relationship starts with listening. You must listen, be empathetic, not have any judgments, and understand the anxieties and everything that happens to a patient with fibroids. You must understand that these patients have lives and anxieties related to medical procedures.
Q: Do you have a favorite patient success story?
A: There are so many good cases that choosing one is hard. At the end of the day, it’s how patients can get their lives back and live without pain or just be able to feel normal and be able to not have bleeding that keeps them from living their lives. All our patients are important, and every result makes me happy.
Q: As a Dallas fibroid doctor, what are some of the biggest challenges you face regarding fibroid treatment?
A: Patient education and access to care is a big challenge. Some may think they are a UFE candidate but aren’t offered that treatment. That’s also a challenge. Patients need to know there’s a noninvasive option, regardless of the size or location of their fibroids. You don’t always have to have surgery; you can keep your female parts if you want. At least knowing you have that option is important.
Q: Do you have a favorite quote, philosophy, or mantra?
A: For me, listening is a big thing. The same is true for being kind and humble. My quote is “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” That’s what I live by. It’s cliché, but it applies to being a good doctor and person.
Q: What are you most passionate about professionally? What most excites you about your job?
A: You must relate to patients, have a good bedside manner, and explain things to patients so they feel comfortable and understand. I am passionate about making patients feel comfortable and better.
Q: What are you passionate about personally? What are your hobbies and interests?
A: I am passionate about my family and my children. I am passionate about youth sports and the way youth sports shape minds and mold character. I’m also passionate about my faith, being a good person, having a higher power to answer to, and understanding the calling we are all called to is part of a bigger plan.
Q: Is there anything else you’d like to share about yourself to help patients connect?
A: When you meet me, know that I understand what you’re going through. I empathize, and I truly want to help. If I can’t help, I’ll be honest with you.
