For years, Leah suffered from abnormally heavy bleeding during her menstrual cycles due to fibroids. Though she jokes that her menstrual bleeding “used to be like a crime scene!” Leah admits she was very embarrassed by it, especially at work. To contain the bleeding, Leah wore a large girdle to help hold the “hugest” maxi pads in place. She also wore tampons. Even with that coverage, she needed to change her sanitary items every 30 to 60 minutes for 7 to 9 days!
In addition to period problems, she was so fatigued. Staying awake at work was even difficult. Leah’s symptoms included:
- Extremely heavy cycles
- Enlarged abdomen
- Constant fatigue
- Lack of clarity
Leah came to Fibroid Institute Dallas after appointments with other doctors failed to give her the fibroid treatment support she was seeking. After even considering a hysterectomy—ready to try anything to find relief from heavy bleeding—she was disappointed by the lack of minimally invasive treatment information to address her fibroid symptoms. Fortunately, Leah found out about Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) and Dr. Suzanne Slonim.

Leah Learned About Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE)
In her consultation at Fibroid Institute Dallas, Leah learned that UFE is a minimally invasive procedure which shrinks fibroids while allowing her to keep her uterus. Plus, since the procedure is non-surgical, recovery time is much shorter than with traditional fibroid removal surgery. Leah would be able to return to her usual activities much more quickly. As a bonus, there are no incisions and no noticeable scarring, only a tiny nick on the wrist to provide the UFE procedure.
Leah also learned that Black women have a higher risk of developing uterine fibroids and they develop fibroids at a younger age than other women. They also experience more severe symptoms, like the heavy bleeding Leah struggled with every month.
According to the Black Women’s Health Imperative, the rate of hospitalization for fibroids is three times higher for Black women than white women. They are also two to three times more likely to undergo a hysterectomy and seven times more likely to have a myomectomy. In these surgeries, complications and blood transfusions are more common than in white women.
Since Black women historically suffer greater complications during fibroid removal surgery, finding alternative treatments is beneficial to successful results. UFE is a great option for women in the Black community experiencing moderate to severe fibroid symptoms. Fibroid Institute Dallas strives to educate and support women in understanding all options, benefits, and risks of treatment for fibroid relief.
