HOUSTON, TEXAS (September 2022): Fibroid Institute Houston welcomes interventional radiologist Dr. John Henry Fischer II to the expanding Texas fibroid practice. Dr. Fischer joins Founder and Medical Director Dr. Suzanne Slonim of the North Texas locations at Fibroid Institute Dallas. Adding a Houston fibroid doctor and locations in South Texas allows more women seeking relief from life altering fibroid symptoms access to non-surgical uterine fibroid treatment. Dr. Fischer will focus on providing progressive, effective, and patient-centric fibroid treatment to women in the Houston, Texas metropolitan area.
About John Henry Fischer II, MD
Dr. John Fischer is a board-certified radiologist with a certificate of added qualification (CAQ) in interventional radiology. He is a pioneer in uterine fibroid embolization (UFE), an innovative, minimally invasive fibroid treatment, and has performed over 3,500 procedures since 2000. He has earned the respect and trust of patients and physicians in the Houston area and is passionate about educating women about fibroid treatment options. Dr. Fischer says, “I am excited to partner with another UFE pioneer, Dr. Suzanne Slonim and Fibroid Institute Dallas, to further develop, promote and advance UFE.”
A third generation Houstonian, Dr. Fischer returned to the city after graduating from UT Austin with high honors. He attended Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and completed his diagnostic radiology residency at the University of Washington in Seattle, where he served as chief resident. He finished his training with an interventional radiology fellowship at UT MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Since 2000, Dr. Fischer has had a noteworthy career in private practice and, more recently, as an Associate Professor of Radiology at the Baylor College of Medicine. He is sought after as speaker, author, and educator on fibroid treatment topics. He also served as primary investigator for one of 10 locations, and the first in the United States charged by the FDA to evaluate new technologies for uterine fibroid treatment. Dr. Fischer is a member of multiple medical societies and serves in leadership roles on committees and boards for hospitals, practices, and organizations.
Says Dr. Fischer, “While I enjoy all types of IR [interventional radiology] cases, UFE has always been my focus and passion. I am proud of the groundbreaking work we did locally, regionally, and nationally to bring UFE into the mainstream and make it a viable treatment option to women suffering with uterine fibroids. I am also proud of and humbled by the collaboration and mutual respect we have been able to establish with many in the local GYN community.” He is excited to bring that experience and expertise to Fibroid Institute Houston, collaborating with Dr. Slonim.
Dr. Fischer greatly appreciates the patient centered focus at Fibroid Institute. “Our commitment is to the patient. We always do what is best for the patient. Nothing is more important than our patient’s safety and satisfaction. We use the latest and greatest techniques, including proprietary pain control protocols, and tailor them to each individual patient.” A self-claimed perfectionist, Dr. Fischer also credits his father’s influence for his work ethic, discipline, and dedication. It is evident that he is passionate about helping his patients and providing them with the best possible care.
Fibroid Institute strives to be an advocate and leader in educating women about their fibroid treatment options. Dr. Fischer could not agree more. “Knowledge is power. It is imperative that patients educate themselves about all available options and understand the advantages, disadvantages, and potential benefits/risks of each. As a physician, I believe one of my primary responsibilities, besides being a healer, is as an educator. Thankfully, many patients have more than one option and informed patients can confidently choose the option best for them.” When a patient chooses UFE, Dr. Fischer finds nothing more gratifying than when she returns to the office for a follow-up, grateful for how he helped change her life.
Dr. Slonim is delighted to welcome Dr. Fischer and Fibroid Institute Houston to the practice. “The addition of such a renowned fibroid expert to the Fibroid Institute family enables us to help more women in Texas looking for non-surgical fibroid treatment. I invite patients and the entire women’s healthcare community to meet Dr. Fischer at his Sugar Land office or via telemedicine,” says Dr. Slonim. Dr. Fischer is currently accepting new patients and looks forward to helping many women live fibroid free.
About Uterine Fibroids and UFE
Uterine fibroids are abnormal growths in the uterus that affect three out of four women, most often between the ages of 30 and 50. Although usually benign, fibroids may lead to life-altering symptoms, such as severe pelvic pain and heavy periods. Fibroids can also cause abdominal bloating, urinary frequency, back pain, and reproductive dysfunction including miscarriage, early labor, and infertility. They are often discovered during routine health testing.
Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a non-surgical treatment that uses image-guided interventional radiology and a small radial catheter in the wrist to introduce microscopic particles that block blood flow to the fibroids, causing them to shrink and die while preserving the uterus. It is a safe, fast, and minimally invasive procedure, often providing an alternative to hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) or myomectomy (surgical removal of the fibroids). Covered by most insurance plans, UFE requires a much shorter recovery time than traditional surgery. The success rate for the procedure is over 90%.
